Funny this is just making headline news today as I wrote about Avoiding Blue Light over four months ago with the Northwestern University published study.
Charging your iPhone
Now yet a NEW published study says that Charging your iPhone, iPad or other electronic devices (such as your computer!) in your bedroom could actually cause you to gain weight. Read the article on these devices causing you to gain weight below:
Professor Agil said: “Currently this process is frequently interrupted, as a result of excessive exposure to artificial lightning during the night, which reduces the levels of endogenous melatonin. “For instance, many people are in the habit of sleeping with their lamps, televisions or their computers switched on, or with the blinds drawn up.
“For all these reasons, it is important to try to sleep in absolute darkness, to avoid interference in the generation of melatonin.”
The hormone is found in particularly high quantities in spices, herbs, tea, coffee, fruit, nuts and seeds.
The study, conducted alongside La Paz University Hospital in Madrid and the University of Texas, was published in the Journal of Pineal Research.
There have been a few doctors, who are ahead of their time, telling us this for years (yet many refuse to listen) I didn’t even fully realize the negative health implications until the last 7 years or so. The article goes on to say
Melatonin is necessary to regulate sleep patterns and is a powerful anti-inflammatory that boosts the metabolism.
Experiments conducted on obese rats found that increased consumption of the hormone made them lose weight and also fought type two diabetes. Scientists believe it can have the same effect on humans.
Developed and developing countries around the world are seeing a significant increase in obesity rates and type two diabetes.
In the UK, the NHS estimates that one in four adults are clinically obese and one in five children aged 10 to 11, with many more being overweight.
Professor Ahmad Agil, who led the study, said the epidemic is primarily caused by humans’ failure to adapt to modern environments, sedentary lifestyles, higher consumption of high-calorie processed food and excessive exposure to artificial lightning reducing melatonin levels.
It boggles my mind that they continually do animal vivisection (experimentation/research) on these animals to discover the obvious that was said long before the testing began. No one needs to deprive any animals of their sleep or put them in cage to solve this one. Since there are already published studies revealing this enlightening information I’m curious why they continue to do more of them. Usually, if they are at universities our tax dollars end up paying for them (not always) but then again, animal research is a huge business (many reports say most of it bogus and inhumane) but millions of tax dollars are spent on it each year. Much of it unnecessarily.
To sum it up- I wouldn’t charge my phone, computer, ipad, iphone, ipod or ANY electronic device in my room. I don’t even recommend a television in the room (though I know I’ve not followed my own advice on this one- though the TV would be switched off with the power to that outlet switched off as well. I keep no alarm clock in the bedroom (Gary Null taught me that years ago – at least 6 feet from your head) and keep the room completely dark with black out blinds.
Oh and if I get up in the middle of the night for something? I keep it dark and just feel my way around. It works : )
